We are a 12 year old volleyball club, whose focus is on low-income
and minority girls. We have grown from one San Diego team to 40
Starlings chapters nationwide. Our teams are a fun and cooperative
way for the 2,500 girls not able to afford elite club volleyball to learn
about nutrition, exercise, teamwork, goal setting and hope – all
elements they’ll carry with them into successful adult lives.

Starlings' high school graduation rates are almost double the
national average for minorities. In 2006, 95% of our 200 seniors
graduated, with 80% going on to college and 61% of them
receiving scholarships. Scholarships were both athletic and
academic.
It's working.
The majority of the girls (58%) are Hispanic or African
American. The others are a combination of American Indian,
White, Filipino, Pacific Islander and many, many other ethnic
groups. One chapter has 20 different ethnic groups
represented.
Not only that...
Over 50 former Starlings volunteer their time coaching
current Starlings. This is especially impressive since all
fomer Starlings are under age 30.
